Finding the right literary agent for your work can be tough.  I know how frustrating the process can be: during my career I received hundreds of query letters every month, and keeping up with them was nearly impossible.  Throughout my time as an agent, I came across so many proposals and manuscripts that I felt were worth developing further, but limited time meant that I had to pick and choose carefully.

 

When I left Curtis Brown in 2016, I found that what I missed most about agenting was actually editing — I love the process of working with writers to make a manuscript as close to perfect as humanly possible.  A great edit is important at every stage of a book’s life: you shouldn’t seek an agent until you are 100% confident that your work is as good as it will ever be — then a good agent will make you edit yet again before submitting to editors, who will then do more editing...
